Dot Plots Worksheets

A dot plot is a primitive form of a typical graph. It represents each piece of data with individual dots. They are very helpful for representing data that consist of only one variable. In some cases, they are much more useful than a bar or line graph when you are trying to make a point about smaller values within data sets. Conversely, they do not lend themselves well to more strenuous data samples. These are very efficient graphic representations that offer accurate comparisons between different simple comparisons. By having the data right in front of you, the reader or observer can get a succinct impression of the contrast you are creating. If you are trying to conserve ink in your printer or color in your markers, they can often be the solution to your predicament. They are often helpful to establish a relationship between two variables in a single dimension as well. We will use the worksheets below to bring you up to speed with this form of graphical representation.

Aligned Standard: HSS.ID.A.1

  • Breakfast Lesson- Many people take a wide array of time to consume their entire breakfast. The amount of time differs based on if they are morning or night people. We took a quick poll on fifteen different students to find the amount of time(in minutes) that they took to eat breakfast and found the following data: 5, 8, 6, 13, 7, 10, 13, 7, 12, 8, 9, 11, 8, 10, 9, 13, 7, 5, 13. Create a dot plot to display the amount of time it takes these students to eat their breakfast.
  • Guided Lesson - Jessica is charge of 20 office buildings. Each building has a different number of workers that reside in each building. The data below shows the occupancy of each building.
  • Guided Lesson Explanation - Our first step is to get the data arranged in ascending order. Now we to organize this data into a frequency table to determine the frequency of the data points. Since the data seems to differ by 10s, we will create a frequency table by 10s starting at the lowest level of tens (20s) to the upper most level of data (90s).
  • Practice Worksheet - Juan is collecting fish in traps for an experiment. The table below shows the number of fish caught in the traps. Make a dot plot to show the results.
  • Review Worksheet - You will breakdown the measures and create your own.
  • Answer Keys - These are for all the unlocked materials above.

Homework Sheets

We will work on making sense of these situations by using the visual form we have been discussing.

  • Homework 1 - Example: Max the squirrel is collecting acorns for the winter. The table shows how many acorns he collected each day.
  • Homework 2 - You will be given a data set and asked to plot it and determine the measures of central tendency for the graph.
  • Homework 3 - This is all about interpretting what is presented for you.
  • Homework 4 - You will answer a series of questions based on a premade graph.
  • Homework 5 - You will create a bunch of different dot plots.

Practice Worksheets

There are many different directions that we take with this data. See what you make of it.

  • Practice 1 - Put these things to use for yourself.
  • Practice 2 - We cover all the major aspects of this topic and hit it hard.
  • Practice 3 - Susan and Richard measure the heights of everyone in their classes and record the information in the dot plots. Answer the series of questions that follow, like: If two students were absent the day Susan measured, how many students are in Susan's class?
  • Practice 4 - Bob is rolling a dice and counting the number of times he gets each number. The frequency of his rolls on three different days are shown. Bring it to life using your new found skills.

Math Skill Quizzes

This will help you understand how well you understand this topic and the surrounding concepts.

  • Quiz 1 - You will make visuals for all the data that is presented to you in story form.
  • Quiz 2 - This quiz covers every aspect of the skill that we have explored together.
  • Quiz 3 - Smith Production has two plants that make widgets. Answer all the questions that come together.
  • Quiz 4 - Coach Miller requires his players to track how long they practice. The chart below shows how many students practiced for each time period. You will create four full scaled visuals to diagram this.
